A full-frame sensor is the size of a 35mm film frame, about 36 × 24 mm, so a lens frames the scene just as it did on a film SLR. The bigger sensor gathers more light, which helps in dim rooms, and gives shallower depth of field at the same framing and aperture. Most of the bodies working photographers trade in are full-frame, from Canon's 5D line and the Nikon D750 to Sony's A7 series, which is why there are so many on the used market. Bodies and lenses are bigger and heavier than APS-C ones.
