Sony · Mirrorless · Full-frame · 2017
Sony announced the A7R III on 25 October 2017, two years after the A7R II, and kept the same 42.4 MP resolution while fixing most of what had held the older camera back. Lower readout noise gave it more dynamic range, and DPReview found it nearly matched the chart-topping Nikon D850. It picked up the A9's button layout, a 3.69M-dot OLED finder, 10 frames a second, twin card slots and the big NP-FZ100 battery, which more than doubled battery life. A new pixel shift mode combines four frames into one more detailed file for still subjects. Sony also said it expected the shutter to last at least 500,000 actuations, a figure usually reserved for pro bodies. Later production was sold as the A7R IIIA with a sharper rear screen. For landscape and studio work it's still plenty of camera.

Shutter count
Sony stores the count, encrypted, inside each original image file. Ask for an untouched JPEG or ARW straight off the card and read it with a free reader such as shuttertool.com or ExifTool, both of which decode it for the A7R III. The rating is the maker's test figure, not a limit, so read it as a guide to how much use is left.

Later bodies were sold as the A7R IIIA (ILCE-7RM3A), with a sharper 2.36M-dot rear screen and the same 42.4 MP sensor. The older A7R II has the same resolution but a single card slot and the small NP-FW50 battery, and the 2019 A7R IV went to 61 MP.
We found no recall for the A7R III. Its two card slots don't match, since only one takes fast UHS-II cards, and like other A7s of its generation it leaves the sensor uncovered with the lens off.
Buying guide
We'd buy a refurbished A7R III body from a US dealer, and $996 delivered gets one, just under the $1,000–1,300 band. There are at least 189 listed, with China and Hong Kong resellers mixed in among US and Japan sellers, and titled counts like 21,722 or 98,132 shots are a small share of Sony's 500,000-cycle rating. Where there's no count, ask for an untouched JPEG or ARW and read it at shuttertool.com or with ExifTool. Check for the NP-FZ100 battery and a charger, and ask for a white-wall shot at f/16, since the sensor sits uncovered with the lens off. Skip the Hong Kong seller at 50% feedback and the zero-feedback ones, and on the $900 body, read the description its title points to before you offer.
