Mirrorless · From 2008
Olympus and Panasonic released the Micro Four Thirds standard in 2008, keeping the sensor size of the older Four Thirds DSLR system and halving the flange distance to 19.25 mm. That made smaller bodies and lenses possible, and because the format is a shared standard, Olympus, OM System, Panasonic and many third-party lenses all fit. The sensor is a quarter the area of full frame, so a lens frames like one twice its focal length.
Four Thirds DSLR lenses need an adapter, and older full-frame lenses adapted to the mount frame like twice their focal length.
