DSLR · From 1987
Canon's EF mount arrived in March 1987 with the EOS 650 and replaced the FD mount. Every EF lens has its own focus motor, and the camera talks to it only through electronic contacts, with no mechanical levers. At 54 mm across it was the widest mount on any 35 mm SLR at launch, and its 44 mm flange distance lets you adapt Nikon F, Olympus OM and M42 lenses with a plain ring. Canon made its 100-millionth EF lens in 2014 and released the last new EF design in 2018. APS-C DSLRs use the EF-S version, which takes both EF and EF-S lenses.
EF-S lenses fit only Canon's APS-C DSLRs, and they won't mount on full-frame EF bodies like the 5D series or 6D Mark II.
