Canon · DSLR · Full-frame · 2008
Canon announced the 5D Mark II in September 2008, and it changed more than photography. It was the first EOS camera to record video and the first full-frame DSLR to shoot 1080p, and filmmakers jumped on it. The House season six finale was shot entirely on one, so was the BBC comedy Shelfstackers, and Laika used sixty of them to make ParaNorman. Barack Obama's 2009 official portrait, the first presidential portrait taken with a digital camera, came from a 5D Mark II too. For stills you get a 21-megapixel full-frame sensor, a 98% pentaprism finder and a shutter Canon rated for 150,000 cycles. Autofocus is the weak spot today, with nine selectable points and six hidden assist points. The first firmware only shot 30p video, and Canon added 24p, 25p and manual audio levels in 2010.

Shutter count
Canon doesn't show the count in the menu or write it into the image files. Connect the camera over USB to a reader that supports DIGIC 4 bodies, such as EOSCount, which reads the camera's own counter. The rating is the maker's test figure, not a limit, so read it as a guide to how much use is left.
How to read a shutter count →The family
The 5D Mark III (2012) replaced it with a 61-point AF system, 6 fps and a second slot for SD cards. The Mark II takes CF cards only and was the first EOS camera to record video.
Early bodies showed black dots on the right side of point lights in night shots and vertical banding in sRAW1 files. Canon acknowledged both in December 2008 and released firmware 1.0.7 in January 2009 to deal with them.
Buying guide
We'd buy a 5D Mark II with a titled shutter count, and $234 delivered gets a refurbished one at 13,752 shots, about a tenth of Canon's 150,000-cycle rating. There are at least 217 listed, and most ask $230–320 delivered, with Japan dealers' graded bodies and ones with the BG-E6 grip toward the top. Canon doesn't put the count in the image files, so ask the seller to read it over USB with EOSCount, and pick one with the LP-E6 battery and a charger or budget for both. Check the photos for a peeling grip, LCD scratches and a loose card door, and ask for a white-wall shot at f/16 to show sensor dust. Early bodies showed black dots beside point lights in night shots, which Canon's January 2009 firmware 1.0.7 dealt with, so ask which firmware it runs.
