Sony came to interchangeable-lens cameras by buying Konica Minolta's camera business and launched its Alpha line on 5 June 2006, built on the old Minolta A-mount. In May 2010 it introduced the E-mount on its first NEX mirrorless bodies, and in October 2013 the A7 and A7R became the first full-frame mirrorless cameras on the market. Sony opened the E-mount specification to third-party lens makers in 2011, which is why Sigma, Tamron, Samyang, Viltrox and many others make lenses for it. For a used buyer that means one mount across APS-C and full-frame bodies, a deep lens catalog, and model codes like ILCE-7M3 that pin down exactly which camera a listing is selling. The line is still going, with the A7 V announced in December 2025.
