Sony · Mirrorless · APS-C · 2019
Sony announced the A6400 on 15 January 2019 and aimed it straight at vloggers. Its screen flips up 180 degrees so you can see yourself, and it brought real-time eye AF and real-time tracking to the A6000 series, features the older A6300 couldn't get by firmware because its processor wasn't up to it. Sony billed the autofocus as the world's fastest at 0.02 seconds. It shoots 11 frames a second, records 4K from the full width of its 24.2 MP APS-C sensor without pixel binning, and drops the old 30-minute clip limit. Firmware 2.0 in June 2019 added animal eye AF. There's no in-body stabilization, it uses the small NP-FW50 battery, and a microphone in the hot shoe covers the flipped-up screen. Common kits paired it with the 16-50mm power zoom or the 18-135mm.

Shutter count
Sony stores the count, encrypted, inside each original image file. Ask for an untouched JPEG or ARW straight off the card and read it with a free reader such as shuttertool.com or ExifTool, both of which decode it for the A6400. Without a rating, compare the count with how the camera was used and price a busy body lower.
How to read a shutter count →The family
The older A6500 has in-body stabilization but lacks the A6400's real-time tracking. The A6600 adds stabilization, the NP-FZ100 battery and a headphone jack and drops the flash. In January 2025 Sony quietly listed an A6400a with no differences in core specs.
We found no recall for the A6400. The single card slot is UHS-I, so it's slow to clear after a burst, and there's no in-body stabilization. It runs much cooler in 4K than earlier A6000-series bodies, so overheating is rarely the problem it once was.
Buying guide
We'd buy a kit with the 16-50mm power zoom and a count in the title, and $677 delivered gets one from a Japan dealer at 21,572 shots, under the $741 median. There are at least 219 listed, and most ask $650–950 delivered, many of them 16-50mm kits from China resellers grading their own "95% New", while refurbished bodies and kits ask $747 to $1,100. Sony doesn't publish a shutter rating, and titles here run from 73 to 57,852 shots, so read the count from an untouched JPEG or ARW with shuttertool.com or ExifTool. Few titles mention the NP-FW50 battery or a charger, so check the photos or budget for one, and look for a flip screen that sits flush and moves smoothly.
