Sensor format
Micro Four Thirds is the standard Olympus and Panasonic launched in 2008 for mirrorless cameras. The sensor's imaging area is 17.3 × 13 mm, with a 2× crop factor, so a 25 mm lens frames like a 50 mm lens on full-frame. That keeps telephoto lenses small and light, which is why hikers and birders like the system, and the short 19.25 mm flange distance lets you adapt almost any older lens. The smaller sensor gives more depth of field at the same framing, which some people want and others don't. Olympus, OM System and Panasonic bodies and lenses all fit each other.
