Lens mounts

The mount decides which lenses fit, and good lenses usually outlive the body they came with. Pick the mount first and the body second, and you can trade up to a newer body later without starting your lens kit over. The fixed-lens Fujifilm X100V doesn't appear here.

DSLR

Canon EF7 bodiesFrom 1987Canon's EF mount arrived in March 1987 with the EOS 650 and replaced the FD mount. Every EF lens has its own focus motor, and the camera talks to it only through electronic contacts, with no mechanical levers. At 54 mm across it was the widest mount on any 35 mm SLR at launch, and its 44 mm flange distance lets you adapt Nikon F, Olympus OM and M42 lenses with a plain ring. Canon made its 100-millionth EF lens in 2014 and released the last new EF design in 2018. APS-C DSLRs use the EF-S version, which takes both EF and EF-S lenses.
Nikon F6 bodiesFrom 1959Nikon introduced the F mount on the Nikon F in 1959, a three-lug bayonet with a 44 mm throat and 46.5 mm flange distance. Nikon never abandoned it when autofocus arrived, extending it instead, so more than 400 Nikkor lenses fit, along with lenses from Sigma, Tamron, Tokina, Zeiss and others. Every Nikon DSLR uses it, from the DX D7500 and D500 to the full-frame D610, D750, D780 and D850.
Pentax K3 bodiesFrom 1975Pentax introduced the K mount in 1975, a three-tab bayonet first drawn up by Zeiss for a joint system that never happened. Pentax kept it, and later versions added electrical contacts, autofocus couplings and lens power while keeping the same bayonet. Every Pentax film and digital SLR since uses it, so a lens from the 1970s still mounts on a K-1 or K-3 Mark III and gets in-body stabilization.
