Body type
Mirrorless cameras
A mirrorless camera has no mirror box. The lens shines straight onto the sensor, and you compose on an electronic viewfinder or the rear screen, which shows the exposure before you take the picture. Panasonic's Lumix G1 started the type in Japan in October 2008, and Sony's A7 of 2013 was the first full-frame one. Without the mirror the bodies are smaller and quieter, and the short gap between mount and sensor lets you adapt older lenses from almost any maker. The tradeoff is battery life, because the sensor and viewfinder are always on, so plan on a spare battery.
