Sony announced the A7 IV on 21 October 2021 with a press release saying it went beyond basic, and it changed more than any standard A7 before it. Resolution rose to 33 MP on a new back-illuminated sensor, the newer BIONZ XR processor took over, and the OLED finder went to 3.69M dots, 1.6 times the A7 III's. The screen now swings out to the side, the menus were rebuilt, and it records 4K at 60 frames a second in Super 35 mode or oversampled from 7K at 30. It's also the first standard A7 that can close its shutter when you switch it off, which keeps dust off the sensor during lens changes. The top card slot takes CFexpress Type A cards or SD, the bottom one SD, both at UHS-II speed. Sony replaced it with the A7 V in December 2025, so it's now the previous model.

Shutter count
Sony stores the count inside each original image file, not on a menu screen. Ask for an untouched JPEG or ARW straight off the card and read it with a free reader such as shuttertool.com, which lists the A7 IV. Without a rating, compare the count with how the camera was used and price a busy body lower.
How to read a shutter count →The family
Over the A7 III it moves from 24 MP to 33 MP, from a tilting to a side-hinged screen, and from two SD slots to one CFexpress Type A or SD slot plus one SD slot. The A7 V replaced it in December 2025, and the A7C II uses a 33 MP sensor in a smaller body.
We found no recall or widely reported defect for the A7 IV. The parts that take wear are the side-hinged screen, the card and port doors and the CFexpress slot.
Buying guide
We'd buy a used A7 IV body with a low titled count, and $1,627 delivered gets one at 2,589 shots from a US seller, at the bottom of the $1,625–2,125 band. There are at least 151 listed, and refurbished bodies here ask $1,605 to $1,758, about what used ones do, while kits with the 28-70mm or a fast prime start near $1,820. Sony doesn't publish a shutter rating, and titled counts here run from 366 to 354,053, so ask for an untouched JPEG or ARW and read the count at shuttertool.com before you pay. Look over the side-hinged screen, the card and port doors and the CFexpress slot in the photos, and ask whether the NP-FZ100 battery and a charger are included. Skip the zero-feedback sellers asking $2,100 to $6,500 for lens bundles, and the auction titled high shutter count.
$1,448.78est. delivered
The lowest fixed price on an A7 IV, a body at $1,449 delivered from a US seller with 100% feedback, $176 under the band. The title gives no count or accessories, so ask for a sample file and whether the NP-FZ100 and a charger are included.

Titled 2,589 shots, very light use, at $1,627 delivered from a US seller with 99.6% feedback, the bottom of the band. Ask whether the battery and a charger come with it, since the title doesn't say.
