Nikon · Mirrorless · Full-frame · 2020
Nikon announced the Z6 II and Z7 II together in October 2020, two years after its Z mount arrived. Its most notable upgrade over the first Z6 is a second card slot, an SD slot beside the CFexpress/XQD one. It's also the first Nikon with two EXPEED 6 processors, which helped with faster autofocus, 4K at 60p in a cropped DX mode and 14 frames per second in 12-bit raw with single-point focus. The 24.5-megapixel back-illuminated sensor is the same one the Z6 used, with five-axis in-body stabilization. With the FTZ adapter it takes Nikon's F-mount lenses, so a DSLR owner can move over without replacing their glass. Nikon has since followed it with the Zf and the Z6III, which makes the Z6 II the older, simpler way into a 24-megapixel full-frame Z body.

Shutter count
Nikon writes the shutter count into every photo's EXIF maker notes, so a free tool such as ExifTool reads it from an original JPEG or NEF straight off the card. The count includes electronic-shutter frames, so a body used for silent shooting reads higher than its mechanical wear. Without a rating, compare the count with how the camera was used and price a busy body lower.
How to read a shutter count →The family
The Z6 II keeps the original Z6's 24.5-megapixel sensor and adds a second card slot (SD UHS-II), two EXPEED 6 processors and 14 fps. A Z6 has only the one CFexpress/XQD slot behind its card door.
We found no Nikon service advisory for the Z6 II in Nikon USA's advisory archive. Check it's really a II, since the original Z6 looks almost the same and has only one card slot.
Buying guide
We'd buy a refurbished Z6 II from a US dealer, and $945 to $965 delivered gets one, under the $1,050–1,425 band. There are at least 67 listed, nearly all body only, with refurbished bodies asking $945 to $1,470, the same spread as used ones, and kits with the 24-70mm f/4 or 24-200mm from about $1,500. Nikon doesn't publish a shutter rating, but a titled count of 354 or 11,000 means barely used, and 110,564 or 141,000 means a hard-worked body. Where there's no count, ask for an original JPEG or NEF and read it with ExifTool, and know that it includes silent electronic-shutter frames. Check it's really a II, since the original Z6 looks almost the same with one card slot, and ask whether the EN-EL15c battery and charger are in the box.
