Nikon announced the D780 in January 2020 to replace the D750, and it's a DSLR built with lessons from the mirrorless Z6. Through the viewfinder it uses 51 phase-detection points running an algorithm taken from the D5 flagship. Switch to live view and it becomes Nikon's first DSLR with on-sensor phase detection, a 273-point hybrid system with eye detection borrowed from the Z series, and it can shoot up to 12 frames per second that way. The 24.5-megapixel back-illuminated sensor reaches ISO 51,200, the shutter runs to 1/8000 s and it records full-frame 4K at 30p. Nikon took a few things away. There's no pop-up flash, no autofocus-assist lamp and no contacts for a vertical grip. DPReview's advice was that F-mount owners should consider it, while newcomers should look at the Z6.

Shutter count
Nikon writes the shutter count into every photo's EXIF maker notes, so a free tool such as ExifTool reads it from an original JPEG or NEF straight off the card. Without a rating, compare the count with how the camera was used and price a busy body lower.
How to read a shutter count →The family
Against the D750, the D780 gains a back-illuminated 24.5-megapixel sensor, a 1/8000 s shutter, UHS-II slots and live-view phase detection. It loses the pop-up flash, the autofocus-assist lamp and the contacts for a vertical grip.
We found no Nikon service advisory for the D780 in Nikon USA's advisory archive. Buyers coming from a D750 should know it has no pop-up flash, no autofocus-assist lamp and no way to add a vertical grip.
Buying guide
We'd pay about $1,255 delivered for a body with a stated shutter count from a top-rated seller, and that gets one titled 21,765 shots with its box. There are at least 84 listed, and most used bodies ask $1,200–1,725 delivered, largely from Japan dealers, while refurbished and new stock on the same search asks a median of about $1,810 to $1,970. Nikon publishes no shutter rating for the D780, so ask for an original JPEG straight off the card and read the count with ExifTool; one $900 body here is titled 196,061 shots. Ask whether it's a Nikon USA body, since Nikon USA won't do warranty work on imports, and pick one with the EN-EL15b battery and MH-25a charger or budget for them.
$860.34delivered
A refurbished body from a US seller at $860 delivered, the lowest on the page and well under the usual asks. The title names no battery, charger or count, so ask for an original JPEG and budget for an EN-EL15b and charger if they're missing.

$1,254.98est. delivered
Titled almost unused at 21,765 shots, with its box, for $1,255 delivered, right at the bottom of the usual band. It ships from Japan with US duty paid, as titled, so ask whether the battery and charger are in the box.
