Nikon · DSLR · Full-frame · 2017
Nikon announced the D850's development on July 25, 2017, its 100th anniversary, and launched it a month later. Demand outran supply so badly that Nikon filled fewer than 10% of preorders on the first shipping day. It was Nikon's first DSLR with a back-illuminated sensor, 45.7 megapixels with no low-pass filter and a base of ISO 64, and it became the first DSLR to score 100 on DxOMark's sensor test. It shoots 7 frames per second, or 9 with the MB-D18 grip and a bigger battery, and uses the same 153-point Multi-CAM 20K autofocus module as the D500. Nikon aimed it at everyone from landscape and wedding photographers to sports shooters. Extras include focus-shift stacking for macro work and the ES-2 adapter for digitizing film negatives, and Nikon tested the shutter to 200,000 cycles in the camera.

Shutter count
Nikon writes the shutter count into every photo's EXIF maker notes, so a free tool such as ExifTool reads it from an original JPEG or NEF straight off the card. The count includes shots taken with the silent electronic shutter in live view. The rating is the maker's test figure, not a limit, so read it as a guide to how much use is left.
How to read a shutter count →The family
The D850 replaced the D810 and was Nikon's first DSLR with a back-illuminated sensor. Nikon's mirrorless successor is the Z8, and the Z7 II offers the same 45.7-megapixel resolution and ISO 64 base on the Z mount.
We found no Nikon service advisory for the D850 in Nikon USA's advisory archive. Plan around its XQD slot, which only takes CFexpress Type B cards from firmware 1.20 on.
Buying guide
We'd buy a refurbished body from a US dealer, and $1,266 with free shipping gets one, well under the $1,829 median. There are at least 166 listed, and most ask $1,475–2,225 delivered, with Japan dealers' Mint-graded bodies, often with $180 to $315 shipping, filling the top. Nikon tested the shutter to 200,000 cycles and titles here run from 44 to 225,531 shots, so ask for an original JPEG or NEF off the card and read the count with ExifTool. Pick one with the EN-EL15a battery and MH-25a charger or budget for both, and know the XQD slot takes CFexpress Type B cards only from firmware 1.20 on. If you want a lens too, the $1,500 kit with the 24-85mm VR, battery, charger and a 2,380-shot count is the easy way in.
