The 5D Mark IV arrived in August 2016 and turned out to be the last 5D. Canon never made another DSLR in this class, and the mirrorless R5 took its place. It borrowed the 61-point AF of the EOS-1D X Mark II, now working at f/8 on every point, and added Dual Pixel AF for live view and video, a touchscreen, GPS and Wi-Fi. The 30.4-megapixel sensor gives far cleaner shadows at low ISO than the Mark III, and dpreview called it the most refined 5D yet. Dual Pixel RAW files let you nudge focus and bokeh slightly in Canon's own software. Video is its weak side, with 4K recorded as Motion JPEG and cropped 1.64x. Canon stopped selling it in Japan in March 2026, though it stayed on sale in some other markets.

Shutter count
Canon doesn't show the count in the menu or store it in the 5D Mark IV's image files, and older readers like EOSCount don't support this generation. Read it over USB with a current shutter-count app that lists the 5D Mark IV. Without a rating, compare the count with how the camera was used and price a busy body lower.
How to read a shutter count →The family
Over the 5D Mark III it adds 30.4 megapixels, Dual Pixel AF, DCI 4K, a touchscreen, GPS and Wi-Fi. Canon sold a Canon Log upgrade for existing bodies from 2017 and shipped later bodies with it installed.
We found no service notice or widespread defect for the 5D Mark IV, so a used one comes down to wear and shutter count. Video buyers should know 4K is Motion JPEG with a 1.64x crop, which fills cards quickly.
Buying guide
We'd buy a refurbished body with the battery and charger, and $799 with free shipping gets one from a US dealer, well under the $1,011 median. There are at least 163 listed, and most ask $875–1,100 delivered, with Japan dealers' Mint-graded bodies and bodies with the C-Log upgrade near the top. Canon doesn't publish a shutter rating for the 5D Mark IV and keeps the count out of the menu and the files, so ask for a screenshot from a current USB shutter-count app that lists it, since older readers like EOSCount don't. Titles here run from 20,992 to 229,000 shots, so the count tells you more than the grade. Skip READ listings unless the description names a fault you can live with, and pick one with the LP-E6N battery and charger or budget for them.
