Canon · Mirrorless · Full-frame · 2020
Canon announced the R5 on 9 July 2020 alongside the R6, and it was the first Canon camera to record 8K video. Its 45-megapixel sensor works with Dual Pixel CMOS AF II, which tracks the eyes, faces and bodies of people, dogs, cats and birds. In-body stabilization works with lens IS for up to 8 stops. It shoots 12 fps with the mechanical shutter and 20 fps electronically, and Canon says the new shutter lasts about 500,000 cycles. There's no fan, so 8K recording stops after about 20 minutes at room temperature, and overheating complaints followed the launch. Canon's answer was the 2022 R5 C, which adds a fan and drops in-body stabilization. For stills, the R5 took the 5D Mark IV's place as Canon's high-resolution all-rounder.

Shutter count
Canon doesn't show the count in the menu. Ask the seller to connect the camera over USB to a shutter-count app that lists the R5 and send a screenshot. The rating is the maker's test figure, not a limit, so read it as a guide to how much use is left.

The R5 C (2022) adds a cooling fan for unlimited recording and drops in-body stabilization, and the R5 Mark II (2024) has a new back-illuminated sensor. Check the listing title for C or Mark II.
Video heat is the known limit. Canon's own figures give about 20 minutes of 8K and about 25 minutes of cropped 4K 60p at room temperature, and dpreview found that shooting stills or leaving the camera on beforehand shortens that.
Buying guide
We'd buy a used body with a count, batteries and a charger, and $2,000 with free shipping gets one titled 24,762 shots, under the $2,288 median. There are at least 143 listed, and most ask $2,075–2,975 delivered, while refurbished cards across the first results page ask a median near $2,027 and open-box ones around $2,640. Canon rates the shutter at 500,000 cycles and doesn't show the count in the menu, so ask for a screenshot from a USB shutter-count app that lists the R5, since one body here is titled 408K. Look for the LP-E6NH battery and a Canon charger, and if you shoot video, know 8K runs about 20 minutes at room temperature before heat stops it. Skip the zero-feedback sellers asking $2,250 to $6,500 and the water-damaged parts auction, and don't plan on the $1,125 auction, which has 18 bids and will climb.
