Sony announced the A7R IV on 16 July 2019 with a 61 MP sensor, a big jump from the A7R III's 42.4 MP. The finder went to a 5.76M-dot OLED, both card slots moved to fast UHS-II, and pixel shift can now merge 16 frames into one file for still life and studio work. DPReview liked the redesigned grip and the improved sealing, with port doors that now lip into the body to keep out water and grit. Japan's Camera Press Club named it Camera of the Year in its 2020 Camera Grand Prix, and the readers' vote went its way too. It runs on the NP-FZ100 battery, rated for about 530 shots through the finder. A later A7R IVA version has a sharper 2.36M-dot rear screen, and the A7R V replaced both in 2022. If you print big or crop hard, this is the Sony to look at.

Shutter count
Sony stores the count, encrypted, inside each original image file. Ask for an untouched JPEG or ARW straight off the card and read it with a free reader such as shuttertool.com or ExifTool, both of which decode it for the A7R IV. Without a rating, compare the count with how the camera was used and price a busy body lower.

Later bodies were sold as the A7R IVA (ILCE-7RM4A) with a sharper 2.36M-dot rear screen. Over the A7R III it goes from 42.4 to 61 MP, makes both slots UHS-II and gets a deeper grip and better sealing. The A7R V replaced it in October 2022.
We found no recall for the A7R IV. DPReview noted occasional focus misses in bursts and a laggy touchscreen, and pixel shift has no motion compensation, so anything that moves between frames smears.
Buying guide
We'd pay around $1,650 delivered for a US body with a stated shutter count, and at that price one titled 21k shots comes with Sony's FE 28mm f/2 lens. There are at least 132 listed, and most used bodies ask $1,600–1,975 delivered, while new-condition listings on the same search ask a median near $2,990. The later A7R IVA (ILCE-7RM4A) shares this page at similar asks and differs only in its sharper rear screen. Sony publishes no shutter rating, so ask for an untouched JPEG or ARW and read the count at shuttertool.com or with ExifTool, and ask for a white-wall shot at f/16, since every speck of sensor dust shows at 61 MP. Pick one with the NP-FZ100 battery and a charger or budget for them, and skip China listings that reuse one photo across sellers.
$1,207.78est. delivered
The lowest ask on the page at $1,208 delivered, a body-only A7R IV from a US seller with 100% feedback. The title names no battery, charger or count, so ask for an original file to read the count and budget for an NP-FZ100 and charger.
