Canon announced the 5D Mark III on 2 March 2012, 25 years after the first EOS camera, and it put autofocus from the flagship EOS-1D X into a 5D body. The 61-point system, with 41 cross-type points, was the first time since the film-era EOS-3 that Canon's top AF went into a camera outside the 1-series. You also get 6 fps, a 100% viewfinder, a quiet shooting mode and slots for both CF and SD cards, and that mix made it a workhorse for wedding and event shooters. Reviewers praised its high-ISO results, and dpreview called it better than its predecessor in almost every respect. Canon rates the shutter for 150,000 cycles. Kung Fury was shot on one, and a 5D Mark III sensor even rode a rocket in 2020, on a CubeSat that never reached orbit.

Shutter count
The count isn't in the menu or the image files. Read it over USB with a tool that supports this body, such as EOSCount, which lists the 5D Mark III. The rating is the maker's test figure, not a limit, so read it as a guide to how much use is left.
How to read a shutter count →The family
The Mark III adds the EOS-1D X's 61-point AF, 6 fps and an SD slot next to the CF slot of the 5D Mark II. The 2016 Mark IV keeps the CF and SD pair and adds 30.4 megapixels, Dual Pixel AF, 4K video and a touchscreen.
Canon issued a service notice saying the displayed exposure value can shift when the LCD panel lights up in extremely dark scenes, and that it won't noticeably affect images. It covers serial numbers whose first digit is 0 and sixth digit is 1 or 2, and Canon offered a free inspection on request.
Buying guide
We'd buy a body with a stated shutter count or a refurbished one, and $404 to $460 delivered gets either, under the $495 median. There are at least 205 listed, and most ask $420–625 delivered, from US sellers and Japan dealers alike. The 5D Mark III shows its count nowhere in the camera, so ask the seller to read it over USB with a tool like EOSCount. Titles here run from 5,262 to 155k shots against Canon's 150,000-cycle rating, so the count tells you more than the grade does. Pick one with the LP-E6 battery and a Canon charger or budget for them, and ask for a white-wall shot at f/16 to check for sensor spots.

The lowest-priced 5D Mark III that isn't a parts body, at $297 with free shipping from a high-volume US seller, well under the band. It's body only with no battery, charger, count or test named, so ask for the count over USB and budget for an LP-E6 and charger.
