Sony · Mirrorless · Full-frame · 2018
Sony called the A7 III its basic model when it announced it on 26 February 2018, and reviewers spent the next year pointing out how little was basic about it. It took the 693-point phase-detect autofocus from the pro A9, along with a joystick, two SD slots and the big NP-FZ100 battery, rated for 710 shots per charge, the longest of any mirrorless camera at launch. The 24.2 MP back-illuminated sensor shoots 10 frames a second, records 4K oversampled from 6K, and sits on 5-axis stabilization rated at 5 stops. You could buy it body-only or with the FE 28-70mm kit zoom. Reviewers praised its rounded feature set as much as its launch price, and Sony kept it in the line until the A7 IV arrived in October 2021.

Shutter count
Sony stores the count, encrypted, inside each original image file. Ask for an untouched JPEG or ARW straight off the card and read it with a free reader such as shuttertool.com or ExifTool, both of which decode it for the A7 III. Without a rating, compare the count with how the camera was used and price a busy body lower.
How to read a shutter count →The family
The A7R III (ILCE-7RM3) is the 42.4 MP high-resolution sibling and the A7S III is the low-light video model. The A7 IV (ILCE-7M4) replaced the A7 III in 2021 with 33 MP and a side-hinged screen, and the A7C uses a similar 24.2 MP sensor in a smaller body.
We found no recall for the A7 III. DPReview flagged the weather sealing along the bottom of the body as its weak spot, and the second card slot only runs at UHS-I speed. The sensor has no vertical anti-aliasing filter, so fine fabric and hair can show moiré.
Buying guide
We'd buy a US body with a stated shutter count and the battery and charger, and $970 delivered gets one at 15,826 shots, under the $1,025 median. There are at least 187 listed, and most ask $950–1,225 delivered, from US sellers, Japan dealers and China resellers alike, while refurbished bodies ask $1,000 to $1,329. Sony doesn't publish a shutter rating, and titles here run from 19 to 280,434 shots, so read the count from an untouched JPEG or ARW off the card with shuttertool.com or ExifTool. Check the photos of the bottom plate and battery door for corrosion, since that's where the sealing is weakest. Skip kits with the 16-50mm, an APS-C lens that crops or vignettes on this full-frame body, and the $681 body whose title lists a built-in flash the A7 III doesn't have.
$858.95delivered
The lowest-priced A7 III we'd consider, at $859 with free shipping from a China reseller, under the band. It names no count, battery or charger, so ask for an original file to read the count, and know a return means shipping it back to China.
