Sony · Mirrorless · Full-frame · 2020
Sony announced the A7C on 15 September 2020 as the smallest full-frame camera with in-body stabilization. It pairs a 24.2 MP back-illuminated sensor and 693-point autofocus, much like the A7 III's, with a rangefinder-style body that puts the finder at the top left corner, the way the A6000 series does. It came with a collapsible FE 28-60mm kit zoom to keep the whole package small. Getting there meant trade-offs. The mechanical shutter tops out at 1/4000 s, with 1/8000 s only from the silent electronic shutter, there's a single SD slot, and DPReview found the 0.59x finder small and fairly low in resolution. There's no front dial or AF joystick either. In return you get the big NP-FZ100 battery and a fully articulated screen that folds in to protect itself. Sony followed it in 2023 with the A7C II and A7CR.

Shutter count
Sony stores the count, encrypted, inside each original image file. Ask for an untouched JPEG or ARW straight off the card and read it with a free reader such as shuttertool.com or ExifTool, both of which decode it for the A7C. Without a rating, compare the count with how the camera was used and price a busy body lower.
How to read a shutter count →The family
In August 2023 Sony added the A7C II (33 MP) and the A7CR (61 MP), which look much like the original. The A7 III has a similar 24.2 MP sensor in a larger body with two card slots, a bigger finder and a 1/8000 s mechanical shutter.
We found no recall for the A7C. Its limits are design choices, with a 1/4000 s mechanical shutter, one card slot and a small finder, and the swing-out screen hinge is the part that takes wear.
Buying guide
We'd buy an A7C with a titled count from a US seller, and $1,035 delivered gets one at 6,000 shots, just under the $1,050–1,325 band. There are at least 190 listed, with China resellers filling the bottom from $900, refurbished bodies across the page asking about $1,067 at the median, and open-box and new retail roughly $1,760 to $1,850. Sony doesn't publish a shutter rating, but titled counts of 6,000 to 13,330 mean light use, and the US body titled 320,000 has been worked very hard. Where there's no count, ask for an untouched JPEG or ARW and read it at shuttertool.com, check the swing-out screen hinge in the photos, and ask whether the NP-FZ100 battery and a charger come with it. Skip the zero-feedback sellers and the China listings that share one photo across accounts.
