Sony · Mirrorless · Full-frame · 2014
Sony announced the A7 II in November 2014, a year after the original A7 and A7R became the first full-frame mirrorless cameras on the market. Its big addition was 5-axis in-body stabilization, which steadies whatever you mount, including old manual lenses on a simple adapter. Sony also toughened the build with a full magnesium alloy chassis and a stainless steel lens mount, added a front dial and moved the shutter button onto the grip. The 24 MP sensor and 2.36M-dot OLED finder are close to the A7's, and it still runs on the small NP-FW50 battery, rated for about 350 shots per charge. Images go to a single slot that takes SD cards or Memory Sticks. Today it's the least expensive way into a stabilized full-frame Sony, and it takes every full-frame E-mount lens Sony and the many third-party makers have built since.

Shutter count
Sony stores the count, encrypted, inside each original image file. Ask for an untouched JPEG or ARW straight off the card and read it with a free reader such as shuttertool.com, which lists the A7 II. Without a rating, compare the count with how the camera was used and price a busy body lower.
How to read a shutter count →The family
The original 2013 A7 (ILCE-7) has no in-body stabilization, a partly polycarbonate body and the same 24 MP resolution. The A7 II added 5-axis stabilization, a magnesium chassis with a stainless steel mount and a relocated shutter button. The 2018 A7 III moved to the bigger NP-FZ100 battery and two card slots.
We found no recall or widely documented defect for the A7 II. The small NP-FW50 battery is rated for only about 350 shots per charge, and nothing covers the sensor when the lens is off, so check it for dust.
Buying guide
We'd buy a body-only A7 II from a US seller with a titled shutter count, and $590 delivered gets one at 845 shots. There are at least 174 listed, and most ask $410–650 delivered, with China resellers grading bodies "95% New" filling the bottom from $378. Several of their kits pair it with the 16-50mm, an APS-C lens that vignettes or crops on this full-frame sensor, so look for the FE 28-70mm instead. Sony doesn't publish a shutter rating, so ask for an untouched JPEG or ARW and read the count at shuttertool.com, and check the photos for dust on the sensor, which sits uncovered with the lens off. The NP-FW50 lasts only about 350 shots a charge, so plan on a spare and make sure a charger comes with it.
