Olympus · Mirrorless · Micro Four Thirds · 2016
Olympus launched the E-M1 Mark II at the end of 2016 as its professional Micro Four Thirds body, and it won Camera of the Year at Japan's Camera Grand Prix 2017. It was built for speed. It shoots 15 frames per second with the mechanical shutter and 60 with the silent electronic one, and Pro Capture records up to 14 frames from before you fully press the button, made for moments like a bird taking off. Olympus claimed its 121 cross-type phase-detection points focus six times faster than the original E-M1's. The 20.4-megapixel sensor floats on five-axis stabilization rated at 5.5 stops, and High Res Shot shifts it to build 50-megapixel images on a tripod. Olympus rated the shutter for 200,000 shots and sealed the magnesium body against weather. A firmware 3.0 update in 2019 brought major autofocus improvements.

Shutter count
Olympus doesn't show the count in its normal menus. Owners reach a hidden service screen from the monitor brightness screen in the setup menu by pressing INFO, OK, then Up, Down, Left, Right, the shutter button and Up, and the mechanical count shows on page 2. The rating is the maker's test figure, not a limit, so read it as a guide to how much use is left.
How to read a shutter count →The family
Over the 2013 E-M1, the Mark II adds a second SD slot, 4K video and 121 cross-type phase-detection points. The 2020 Mark III keeps the same sensor and adds a 400,000-shot shutter, stronger stabilization, a joystick and a menu button moved to the top left.
We couldn't find an Olympus or OM System service advisory for the E-M1 Mark II. The things to check are the usual ones for a hard-working camera, mainly shutter count, sensor dust and worn card slots.
Buying guide
We'd buy a body with a count in the title, and $626 delivered gets one from a Japan dealer titled 7,764 shots, under the $657 median. There are at least 74 listed, and most ask $525–825 delivered, with Japan dealers' graded bodies and their $77 to $250 shipping filling the middle. Olympus rates the shutter at 200,000 cycles and one $515 refurbished body here is titled 273,314, so when a title has no count, ask for a photo of the hidden service screen, reached from the monitor brightness setting, where the count shows on page 2. Check for the BLH-1 battery and BCH-1 charger, which few titles mention, and skip the three China listings that share one photo and title. The UK auction at $130 has 12 bids and will climb, so don't plan on that price.
