Olympus · Mirrorless · Micro Four Thirds · 2020
Olympus announced the E-M1 Mark III in February 2020, less than a year before it handed its camera business to OM Digital Solutions. Reviewers grumbled that it kept the Mark II's 20-megapixel sensor, viewfinder and screen, but the changes inside were real. Olympus fitted a shutter tested for 400,000 shots, twice the Mark II's rating, and a new sensor coating that it said cut dust spots to a tenth. Stabilization went up to 7 stops on its own and 7.5 with a stabilized lens. New features include a handheld 50-megapixel High Res Shot, Live ND, which previews an ND filter effect in the viewfinder, and Starry Sky AF, which can focus on stars for astrophotography. It also gained a joystick, Bluetooth and USB-C charging, and it can run from a USB power bank. Its successor is the OM System OM-1.

Shutter count
Olympus doesn't show the count in its normal menus. Owners of earlier OM-D bodies read it from a hidden service screen reached through the monitor brightness setting, and the same route is reported for the E-M1 Mark III, but we couldn't confirm it for this model. If the seller can't open it, judge the body by its wear. The rating is the maker's test figure, not a limit, so read it as a guide to how much use is left.
How to read a shutter count →The family
The Mark III uses the Mark II's sensor, viewfinder and screen but adds the TruePic IX processor, a 400,000-shot shutter, 7-stop stabilization and a joystick. Tell them apart by the joystick on the back and the menu button at the top left.
We couldn't find an Olympus or OM System service advisory for the E-M1 Mark III. With a 400,000-shot shutter, wear on the controls and card slots matters more than the count on most bodies.
Buying guide
We'd buy a refurbished E-M1 Mark III with a low titled count, and $839 delivered gets one at 3,760 shots from US stock, under the $875–1,100 band. There are at least 46 listed, mostly from Japan dealers who put the count in the title, and even 111,187 shots is a little over a quarter of Olympus's 400,000-cycle rating. With a shutter that tough, wear on the controls, card door and grip says more than the count, so look closely at the photos. Ask whether the BLH-1 battery and a charger come with it, since few titles say. Skip the sellers under 98% feedback, and the $1,586 body from Japan that asks well over the band without saying why.

$733.80est. delivered
The lowest-priced E-M1 Mark III with a stated delivered price, $734 from a Japan dealer, titled 111,187 shots. That leaves most of Olympus's 400,000-cycle rating, but ask whether the BLH-1 battery and a charger are included.
