Nikon · DSLR · Full-frame · 2013
Nikon announced the D610 in October 2013, barely a year after the D600, and the headline change was a new shutter. D600 owners had complained about dust spots building up on their sensors, and Nikon ended up offering to inspect, clean and replace the shutter on any D600 for free, even out of warranty. The D610's shutter also added a quiet continuous mode at 3 frames per second and nudged the top speed to 6 fps. Everything else carried over, including the 24.3-megapixel full-frame sensor, 39 autofocus points, two SD slots and a pentaprism finder with full coverage. Nikon pitched it as its compact, lightweight full-frame model, with magnesium top and rear covers and sealing to the same standard as the D800. It shares the EN-EL15 battery with the D750 and D500, so spares are easy to find.

Shutter count
Nikon writes the shutter count into every photo's EXIF maker notes, so a free tool such as ExifTool reads it from an original JPEG or NEF straight off the card. The rating is the maker's test figure, not a limit, so read it as a guide to how much use is left.
How to read a shutter count →The family
The D610 replaced the D600 a year after launch with a new shutter, a quiet continuous mode at 3 fps and 6 fps top speed. The bodies look almost the same, so check the model name on the front.
We found no Nikon service advisory for the D610 itself. Its new shutter was the fix for the D600, whose sensors gathered dust spots until Nikon offered free shutter replacements, so make sure the body really is a D610.
Buying guide
We'd buy the refurbished body with battery and charger at $249 with free shipping from a high-volume US dealer, well under half the $644 median. There are at least 174 listed, and most ask $470–775 delivered, with Japan dealers' low-count bodies near the top. Nikon tested the shutter to 150,000 cycles, and three bodies here are titled past it at 157,000 to 170,000, so ask for an original JPEG or NEF off the card and read the count with ExifTool. Check the model name on the front, since the D600 looks almost the same and its sensors gathered dust spots, and ask for a white-wall shot at f/16 either way. Pick one with the EN-EL15 battery and MH-25 charger or budget for both, and skip zero-feedback sellers and the $2,800 set.
$249.00delivered
The lowest-priced D610 by far, refurbished with the battery and charger at $249 with free shipping from a US dealer. It's more than $200 under the band and names no count, so ask for an original file to read it.
