Canon announced the 80D in February 2016 as the successor to the 70D, at the same body-only price. It's an enthusiast APS-C DSLR with a new 24.2-megapixel Dual Pixel sensor, so live view and video focus smoothly by phase detection, even in Full HD at 60p. Through the 100% viewfinder you get 45 AF points, all cross-type, and it was the first non-professional EOS body that could autofocus at f/8 with a lens and teleconverter, using the center point. It shoots 7 fps and adds a headphone jack, NFC and Wi-Fi to a vari-angle touchscreen. Canon sold it body-only or in kits with the EF-S 18-55mm IS STM, the new EF-S 18-135mm IS USM or the EF-S 18-200mm IS. The 90D replaced it in 2019 with more resolution and 4K video.

Shutter count
Canon doesn't show the count in the menu or store it in the 80D's image files. Read it over USB with a shutter-count app that lists the 80D. Without a rating, compare the count with how the camera was used and price a busy body lower.
How to read a shutter count →The family
The 80D replaced the 70D with a 24.2-megapixel sensor and 45 cross-type points instead of 19. The 2019 90D adds 32.5 megapixels, 10 fps, 4K and a joystick.
We found no service notice or widespread defect reported for the 80D, so a used one comes down to wear and shutter count.
Buying guide
We'd buy a US body with a count in the title, and $439 delivered gets one the seller says took around 400 to 500 photos, well under the $564 median. There are at least 201 listed, and most ask $430–750 delivered, and kits with the 18-55mm or 18-135mm mostly ask $495 to $645, not much over a body. Canon doesn't publish a shutter rating for the 80D or show the count in the camera, so ask the seller to read it over USB with a shutter-count app that lists the 80D, since titles here run from 1,209 to 135,760 shots. Most body-only listings name no LP-E6N battery or charger, so pick one that does or budget for them. Skip the $311 not-working body when a tested one asks $370 delivered.

The lowest-priced 80D titled tested, at $370 delivered from a Japan seller. It names no battery, charger or count, so budget for an LP-E6N and charger and ask for the count over USB.
