Ricoh announced the K-1 Mark II on 22 February 2018 and kept almost everything that made the K-1 good. The 36.4-megapixel full-frame sensor, the cross-tilt screen, the 300,000-release shutter and the sealed magnesium body all carry over. The change is inside. A new accelerator unit cleans up the sensor's signal before it reaches the imaging engine, which cuts high-ISO noise compared with the K-1 and lifts the top setting to ISO 819,200. Pixel Shift Resolution gained a Dynamic mode that works handheld, using the small shifts of your own hands to build the four-frame composite. On the same day Ricoh announced an upgrade service that fitted the new main board to existing K-1s for a limited time in 2018. In 2026 Ricoh said it would end production of its current K-series DSLRs and develop a new series.

Shutter count
Pentax writes the count into each photo's maker notes, so ask for an untouched JPEG or RAW file and read it with ExifTool or a similar viewer. The counter leaves out live view and video, and servicing can reset it. The rating is the maker's test figure, not a limit, so read it as a guide to how much use is left.
How to read a shutter count →The family
It keeps the K-1's sensor, screen, shutter and body and adds an accelerator unit, ISO 819,200 and handheld Dynamic Pixel Shift. Ricoh's 2018 upgrade service gave original K-1s the same main board, and those bodies carry an SR II logo plate in place of the SR one.
We found no service notice for the K-1 Mark II. The main thing to sort out is whether a listing is a factory Mark II or an original K-1 with Ricoh's 2018 board upgrade.
Buying guide
We'd buy a K-1 Mark II with a titled count, and $1,269 to $1,329 delivered gets one, well under the $1,375–2,025 band. There are at least 21 listed, nearly all from Japan dealers or their US stock, and titled counts of 24,233 to 39,481 shots are a small share of Pentax's 300,000-cycle rating. The main thing to confirm is that it's a factory Mark II and not an original K-1 with Ricoh's 2018 board upgrade, and ask whether the D-LI90P battery and a charger are included. Where there's no count, ask for an untouched JPEG or RAW file and read the maker notes with ExifTool. Skip the sellers under 98% feedback, and the Silver Edition at $2,020 is a numbered limited run, so it doesn't set the price.
