Pentax · DSLR · Full-frame · 2016
The K-1 is Pentax's first full-frame digital SLR. Ricoh announced it in February 2016 and shipped it that April, after more than a decade of APS-C bodies. Its 36.4-megapixel sensor sits on a five-axis Shake Reduction unit rated at up to five stops, so every lens you mount is stabilized, old manual-focus glass included. The same unit drives Pixel Shift Resolution, which moves the sensor between four frames to record full color at every pixel. The rear screen hangs on four metal struts and tilts in almost any direction, and small LEDs light the lens mount and card slots for night work. The magnesium body has 87 seals and works down to minus 10 °C, and Ricoh tested the shutter to 300,000 releases. Mount an APS-C DA lens and it switches to a 15-megapixel crop.

Shutter count
Pentax writes the count into each photo's maker notes, so ask for an untouched JPEG or RAW file and read it with ExifTool or a similar viewer. The counter leaves out live view and video, and servicing can reset it. The rating is the maker's test figure, not a limit, so read it as a guide to how much use is left.
How to read a shutter count →The family
The K-1 Mark II (2018) adds an accelerator unit for cleaner high ISO, a top setting of ISO 819,200 and handheld Dynamic Pixel Shift. In 2018 Ricoh offered an upgrade that swapped a K-1's main board for the Mark II's and replaced the SR logo on the front with an SR II plate.
We found no service notice for the K-1. Some bodies sold as K-1s went through Ricoh's 2018 main-board upgrade and have Mark II internals, which only adds features.
Buying guide
We'd buy a K-1 from a US seller titled working or refurbished, and $914 to $942 delivered gets one, under the $1,025–1,525 band. There are at least 17 listed, mostly from Japan dealers who often add $130 to $242 shipping, and their titled counts of 19,117 to 65,892 shots are a small share of Pentax's 300,000-cycle rating. Where a title has no count, ask for an untouched JPEG or RAW file and read the maker notes with ExifTool. Few titles mention the D-LI90P battery or its charger, so ask, and skip the zero-feedback sellers. The Limited Silver bodies at $2,000 and up are a special edition of the same camera.

The lowest-priced K-1, and it comes with four batteries and a charger, at $882 delivered from Australia. It isn't titled tested and gives no count, so ask for a sample file and check the return terms before buying from overseas.

Titled works perfectly, from a US seller with 100% feedback, at $914 delivered, about $110 under the band. The title doesn't mention the battery or charger, so ask, or budget for a D-LI90P and a charger.
