Nikon announced the D500 alongside its D5 flagship in January 2016, and the pitch was simple. It put the D5's 153-point autofocus into a smaller DX body and replaced the D300S as Nikon's DX flagship. It shoots 10 frames per second with a buffer of up to 200 raw files, and the 1.5x crop makes long lenses reach further. Nikon gave it a magnesium and carbon-fiber sealed body, a shutter tested for 200,000 actuations, 4K video, a tilting touchscreen and the first UHS-II SD slot on any Nikon. It was also Nikon's first camera with flicker reduction for shooting under artificial light. There's no pop-up flash, by design. Nikon discontinued it in February 2022, and PetaPixel's story on the news called it a triumph of the DSLR era.

Shutter count
Nikon writes the shutter count into every photo's EXIF maker notes, so a free tool such as ExifTool reads it from an original JPEG or NEF straight off the card. The rating is the maker's test figure, not a limit, so read it as a guide to how much use is left.
How to read a shutter count →The family
The D500 replaced the D300S as Nikon's DX flagship. The cheaper D7500 shares its 20.9-megapixel sensor and processor but has 51 autofocus points, one SD slot and no grip option.
We found no Nikon service advisory for the D500 in Nikon USA's advisory archive. The XQD slot only takes CFexpress Type B cards after the C firmware 1.30 update, and there's no pop-up flash.
Buying guide
We'd buy a D500 with a titled count well under Nikon's 200,000-cycle rating, and $699 delivered gets one at 53,816 shots with an 18-55mm lens from a US seller. There are at least 149 listed, and most ask $925–1,500 delivered, the bulk from Japan dealers who often add $98 to $286 shipping. Nikon writes the count into every photo's EXIF, so where a title has none, ask for an original JPEG or NEF and read it with ExifTool, and check for the EN-EL15 battery and charger. Ask for a white-wall shot at f/16 for sensor dust, and know the XQD slot only takes CFexpress Type B cards after firmware 1.30. Skip the 100th Anniversary Model bodies at $2,751 to $2,888, a 2017 commemorative edition of the same camera, and the body titled 517,441 clicks unless you're ready to replace a shutter.
